Christmas Trivia - Christmas Bells

Why are bells associated with Christmas?

Tolling of bells signifies an event.  One such event, of course, is the Christmas Eve church service. Bells may also be rung during the Christmas season to announce the arrival of the season, or to proclaim the coming of Christ.

However, as with most Christmas traditions, the roots of Christmas bell ringing can also be tracked to pre-Christian pagan celebrations. Noisemakers, including bells, were used in winter celebrations to chase away devils, demons, or evil spirits, and continued to be used during the Christian Christmas season, although with a different meaning attached.
